Putting People First: Health, Leadership, Unity

About Dr Raul Garcia

Born in Pinar del Rio, Cuba, Raul Garcia was able to escape Castro’s communist regime with his mother at age 11. They immigrated to Madrid, Spain, where the Catholic Church helped them obtain political asylum to the United States. The two refugees settled in Miami, Florida, and began working to achieve the American Dream.

Starting from knowing very little English, Raul studied hard. He eventually graduated from the University of Miami with a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology/Immunology. He then went on to graduate from medical school at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. He developed a passion for Emergency Medicine and has worked as an Emergency Room doctor for 26 years.

Dr Garcia has served in leadership positions in his field throughout his career. In addition to Emergency Medicine, Dr Garcia has been a successful small business owner of his own medical practice, one of the founding Deans of two medical schools, and the Medical Director of two hospitals. He is currently the Medical Director of Astria Toppenish Hospital.

Dr Garcia founded ‘Opportunity for Washington’ as a non-profit, nonpartisan effort promoting education and change. He  helped found the Partnership for Food Security in 2020 to promote COVID-19 education, particularly in the Latino community. He is dedicated to serving people in his community and encouraging a more positive outlook for the future of our state and our resilient country.

Finally, and most importantly, Raul is husband to his wonderful wife Jessica and the proud father of five beautiful children.
