Laura Lynch, who Lost her Daughter to Fentanyl Poisoning, on Why She’s Supporting Dr Raul Garcia:

Video text:

“My name is Laura Lynch. I lost my daughter, Brillion, to fentanyl poisoning. She had taken half of a pill. They said she had enough fentanyl in her system to kill over three dozen people.

“I wrote to Maria Cantwell, and I got a canned response. That’s why I’m supporting the first Republican candidate that anyone in my family has ever voted for, Raul Garcia. He sees it every day at the ER, and he’s cried with me. He’s one of these rare people that really cares.”

Video Summary:

Dr. Raul Garcia is deeply concerned about the fentanyl crisis and the rise of homelessness in Washington state. He is critical of the government’s current strategies, stating that “they have allowed the problem to worsen.”

He believes that the current approaches (“housing first” and “harm reduction”) being used in Washington have failed to combat fentanyl and reduce homelessness, and instead, have contributed to their increase.

As a solution, Dr. Garcia advocates for the “Americans Against Fentanyl Act.” This act would target serious fentanyl dealers with mandatory felony charges, and help addicts with involuntary treatment and recovery programs to provide them the healing they need.

He believes a stronger law-enforcement response, paired with mandatory rehabilitation, is necessary to protect communities and help individuals struggling with addiction to rebuild their lives.

Dr. Garcia wants to see stronger measures in place to combat the fentanyl crisis and its devastating impact on communities across Washington.

Video summary:

We find ourselves in the midst of a heartbreaking crisis that affects our communities deeply—an epidemic of the deadly drug fentanyl that has touched many of our lives. Dr. Raul Garcia, an emergency room physician with 26 years of experience, witnesses the painful reality of this crisis daily, seeing two to five overdoses each shift in his ER. It’s a staggering reality that someone loses their life to an overdose every 4 minutes and 45 seconds. These numbers are not just statistics: they represent our friends, family members, and neighbors who are struggling.

To combat this urgent issue, we must come together as a community. One important step is the Americans Against Fentanyl Act, which would hold drug dealers accountable and reduce the harmful presence of fentanyl on our streets. But we must also focus on healing and recovery. That’s why we advocate for a comprehensive rehabilitation program, one that goes beyond mere treatment. This program would provide essential mental health counseling and create pathways for individuals to reintegrate into our communities. By partnering with local housing, businesses, colleges, and universities, we can foster an environment where recovery is not only possible but supported.

This is a moment that calls for compassion, understanding, and action. Together, we can work toward a brighter future for everyone in Washington state, ensuring that no one has to face this battle alone. Let’s support one another and take meaningful steps to address this crisis with the urgency and care it deserves.

Freedom from Fentanyl Walk

From July 16 to July 21 of this year, Dr Garcia led a six-day “Freedom From Fentanyl Walk” from Central Washington to Seattle. Dr Garcia was joined by family, friends, former addicts and people whose loved ones died from fentanyl poisoning and overdose, and advocates.

“A painful, but excellent, read from The Seattle Times. We are failing our young people caught up in the fentanyl crisis — those who are addicted and those who are poisoned by fentanyl-laced drugs. We must take strong, decisive action NOW to save lives & protect our children.

“Washington has one of the highest rates of teen fentanyl deaths. Our leaders, including Sen. Maria Cantwell, aren’t working hard enough to protect our children from this deadly drug. My Americans Against Fentanyl Act will target dealers and help addicts.”

“At the end of the six-day Freedom From Fentanyl Walk on July 21, Laura Lynch spoke about the death of her beautiful 18-year-old daughter, Brillion, from fentanyl poisoning.

“Laura emphasizes that the fentanyl crisis affects everyone, everywhere, and that fentanyl deaths among young people are rising especially in Washington state. Laura describes how difficult it is to punish dealers for their crimes and how easy it is to buy drugs — many of which are laced with fatal doses of fentanyl without the user’s knowledge — online.

“We are so grateful to Laura for sharing her story and for, despite her tremendous pain, being an advocate to honor Brillion and save lives.”
